Yael Writes’ Week In Review: Week of July 14th, 2012

Well, it’s been busy here at the Yael Writes HQ. Here’s a quick summary of the past week.

On Saturday, I published a post called On Crossfit Mean Streets: A Call for a Paradigm Shift, in response to Jonathan Maseng’s article in the L.A. Weekly, my response to a complete lack of integrity and ethics (and the culture that makes it possible.)

On Monday, I learned that I won a debate on squats vs. deadlifts, in which I faced Chad Lemus of Liberation Athletics head-on at Mixup (the Web), winning with a very narrow lead. Thanks to everyone who voted, no matter who you picked.

Also on Monday, I posted the results of fights which took place nearly two years ago. Finally! Ultimate Women Challenge Results included links to all my previous reporting on this debacle of a reality show.

On Tuesday, I wrote a response to Daniel Tosh’s so-called “rape joke”, which included both my own thoughts and quotes from some particularly insightful writers and comedians.

On Wednesday, Savvy.mn published an online version of Fresh Passion, my cover story on food photographer, blogger and home cook Stephanie A. Meyer. If you live in the Twin Cities, subscriptions are free! The print version has a fun recipe in the sidebar.

On Thursday, Black Belt Magazine released the image of their September cover, which will include an article I wrote nearly two years ago on countering guillotines to submission…as demonstrated by BJJ black belt and UFC veteran Eric “Red” Schafer, who’s one of my favorite grapplers, and I’m really excited it’s finally going to be shared with the world instead of sitting in a file cabinet somewhere. I will let you know when it hits newsstands, so you can pick one up yourself.

(An aside: Also on Thursday, I made this amazing steak dry rub with avocado salsa and a chopped broccoli salad, and I just had to share the recipe with you. OMG. Coming from someone who never says OMG.)

Now it’s Friday, which means that Bellator’s on, as well as UFC 149 on Saturday. If you’re a fight fan, come hang out on twitter, especially tomorrow night. (My UFC 149 preview is up on GuySpeed.)

Last but not least, I wanted to let you know that I will be giving away a free copy of Chris Guillebeau’s $100 Startup to a randomly selected ‘fan’ once I hit 500 likes on my facebook page. I’m at 453 right now, so come join the party.

I’m not sure if next week will be as exciting as this one was, but I will definitely keep you posted.

I want to get posts like this delivered to my inbox.
